3 Best Mods for the S55 engines (F80 M3)

Building On BMW’s Motorsport DNA

The F80 M3 is a high watermark for the modern M division—lightweight, turbocharged, and packing a chassis that responds beautifully to smart upgrades. But like any performance platform, it still leaves a lot of room for refinement.

This particular example came into the Xatrix workshop with a simple brief: tighten the handling, extract a bit more character from the exhaust, and keep everything daily-driveable. The result is a subtly enhanced M3 that stays true to its factory feel, while gaining sharper feedback and a more authentic sound.

The Setup – What We Installed

Eibach Pro-Kit Lowering Springs

Eibach’s Pro-Kit offers an ideal balance for drivers seeking enhanced handling without compromising daily drivability. The progressive spring rates provide improved cornering dynamics and reduced body roll while maintaining comfort during normal road use. A moderate drop in ride height also visually corrects the M3’s slightly raised factory stance, enhancing presence without over-aggressiveness.

This setup integrates seamlessly with the OEM dampers, which is crucial for clients who want to retain factory electronic damping while still achieving a more performance-oriented feel. At Xatrix and ML Performance, we’ve found Eibach’s spring technology to be consistently well-engineered, durable, and perfectly matched to the F80 chassis dynamics.

Eibach 12mm Wheel Spacers (Front & Rear)

Precision-machined and hub-centric, Eibach’s spacers deliver improved track width and visual stance without compromising safety or ride quality. A wider front and rear footprint enhances chassis balance during cornering, offering subtle gains in lateral grip and road feel.

Spacers are often misunderstood, but in this application, they serve both a functional and aesthetic purpose—aligning the wheels with the arches and giving the car a more aggressive and planted silhouette. Eibach’s reputation in motorsport and OE manufacturing standards made them the clear choice for this application.

Evolve Automotive Catless Downpipe

Evolve’s catless downpipe is engineered to significantly reduce exhaust backpressure, allowing the S55 twin-turbo system to breathe more efficiently. The result is improved turbo spool, enhanced throttle response, and increased mid-range torque. Acoustically, the system also gains a more pronounced and mechanical tone, bringing out the raw character often muted by the stock exhaust setup.

This component was selected not just for its performance gains, but for its exceptional build quality and compatibility. Manufactured from TIG-welded stainless steel and designed to fit with factory and aftermarket systems, it represents a refined approach to high-flow exhaust tuning for the F80 platform.

Behind the Wheel – A Subtle Yet Impactful Transformation

After completing the install, we took the M3 out for a quick shakedown drive. The most immediate takeaway is how composed the car feels—lower, more grounded, but not harsh. The new spring and spacer setup improves turn-in confidence and gives the car a more muscular, aggressive stance.

But it’s the exhaust that leaves a lasting impression. With the Evolve downpipe fitted, the S55 finally sounds like it means business—deeper, more raw, and far more engaging. On downshifts, the overrun burbles add a satisfying edge that makes every gear change feel theatrical.

This is the kind of upgrade path we love: carefully considered, not overdone, and deeply rewarding from the driver’s seat.

Why We Love This Build

This M3 build captures the essence of what we aim for with Project Cars—smart upgrades that honour the DNA of the car while dialling up its personality. Every part here was chosen for a reason: reliability, performance, and balance.

It’s a perfect example of how just three well-chosen components can have a transformative impact on driving dynamics, sound, and aesthetics—all without turning the
