This is a genuine BMW dual-pickup oil pump upgrade as found in the S55 engine used in the M2C/M3/M4.
BMW Motorsport Racing division used this upgrade as it is better suited to track work than the standard N55 oil pump. The dual-pickup system means oil starvation is greatly minimized or eliminated.
The main S55 oil pump has revised internals that makes it more efficient and it pumps more oil than the standard N55 pump. Different materials also make it stronger and more durable when used in hotter temperatures.
BMW added a second oil pump that collects oil from the corners of the oil pan, also called a suction or scavenger pump. The second pump helps distribute oil under hard longitudinal forces, specifically under braking. Dual front pickups on the suction pump take in oil, even when the main sump pickup is dry. The second pump is used with a revised deflector plate (windage tray or baffle) to retain oil in the pan and reduce "churning losses" from too much oil coating the crankshaft.
